I'm basically qualified to work in F1 now. Who wants to give me an internship or something?

Dude, work with Purdue's Formula SAE team before making statements like that. On second thought, work with Purdue's Formula SAE team, it's easily the best experience you can have in building cars.

(that's where I helped with the carbon fibre...)

Good.

But seriously, you'll have fun there, Formula guys are a good group to be around. Formula is also the easiest way to get rid of a girlfriend, so be aware of that part too.

1) Starts distance relationship

2) Still does formula

I'm curious. I've been wanting to play with carbon fiber for a little while now.

Was it 2x2 twill? What weight? What did you use for resin? For the vacuum bagging, did you use just a single point to draw out air, or did you actually use a piece of perforated hose to draw out air over a large area?

Congratulations! Carbon work is cool. Once it's done, watch out for splinters... it's like fiberglass but way worse...

I've been on my university's SAE Supermileage (like Formula but way less exciting; also 1/10 the cost so we can actually, you know, do it here) team for 4 years - I've done a lot of carbon fiber work. We've done entire cars as a monocoque with wet layup in one-go. I dare say there are a few of us very good at it.

As an EE it means nothing for career opportunities, but it's still neat.

The hybrid guys are the best to be around at my school. And if you want to go hardcore carbon fiber you do solar car.

Fuck if I know, we just made a simple patch to a broken panel and the process was just like fiberglass.

Formula Hybrid has some messed up rulings as of late, was talking to a guy on one of the better teams who said it's basically better to go full electric than hybrid. I don't know the full details, it just always has seemed a bit like the red-headed stepchild.

Solar car is pretty neat, but the SAE Supermileage guys use a lot of carbon as well.

that looks like 2x2 twill 3k weight by the look of it.

resin is very much based on your process and intended part use. huntsman and momentive make good stuff. Momentive is more willing to ship reasonable quantities. Huntsman likes to sell 55gal drums...

on vacuum bagging: the perforated hose is usually only used when you do resin infusion, aka put dry carbon sheets in a mold and have the vacuum pull the resin into it after bagging.

usually when using wet cloth in the mold you use simpler vacuum ports (one or more depending on size and part geometry) with bleeder cloth.

all of this is just from my experience as the FSAE aero team leader at the University of Illinois a couple years ago

Ive read through the rules pertinent to my subteam (aero) and they're a lot better than the new fsae rules. They changed the fsae aero rules in response to our schools fsae car.

We have fsae, hybrid, solar, supermileage, and baja (among others). Theres always carbon flying around somewhere. :)

MRacing I presume? That car, from the instant I saw it, was wondering how long until it got banned.

Hahaha i dont think you were the only one!! As we were watching it being built we were all wondering the same thing. I will say it was blazingly fast and sounded excellent.
